iPhoneInterface starts to crack open iPhone

It looks like hacking the iPhone took a huge step forward last night. iPhone enthusiasts over at the #iphone-talk and #iphone-mac channels on irc.osx86.hu have developed iPhoneInterface, a new Windows and Mac tool that allows you to manipulate the iPhone's state, launch services, and interact with the iPhone filesystem. With it, you'll be able to scan the iPhone file structure, create and remove folders, start iPhone services, and more. It's still in its early days so don't expect too much from this first release. A public subversion server should be up overnight. Pop over to the irc channel for more information.

Thanks to everyone on #iphone-talk, especially lixivial.

Is there a way to search for keyword(s) in the notes, contacts or datebook events? (I didn't see anything in the manual. I have 1000+ contacts and sometimes it's nice to be able to search for a keyword or two.) Thanks, Chet

I think the story's come out too soon then. I just don't see the value in a largely non-developer crowd getting this news that doesn't pertain to them.

to hack i phone for other company you should try to hack your sim with simemu on piccard 2.
it will bypass at&t block.
in italy we do like this for 3g blocked phone.
There is no way to unblock the phone so we make a clone of another company sim and put it on a piccard with simemu.
www.simemu.com
that is the team that you should ask to crack i phone

ciao

I agree with RichP. I'm in the Netherlands and I can't remember the last time I saw a new phone come out locked into one phone company. I can't even think of a phone being SIMlocked period. It just won't fly over here. Maybe that's why the Netherlands isn't on the list when Apple says it will be released "in Europe". Which, by the way, includes more countries than France, Germany and the UK!

GSM is a bit more touchy than TCP; there will always be *something* locked on the iPhone, but it could be as "locked" eventually as the bluetooth stack is. Apple doesn't care how we hack the AppleTV, so chances are, they don't care too much how we hack the iPhone so long as it doesn't risk them some nasty lawsuit.

@nate: if it's a bit complex, let it "cook" a bit until it reaches your (and my) level of expertise or interest

@mangler: feel free to provide a download link

@29

He wasn't being insulting. He was being honest. If you don't know what to do with a subversion link, it is a NON-TRIVIAL task for you by definition.

Was the expectation that he explain installing the dev toolchain, detail pulling the source from the trunk, walk thru doing a build from the term and then step by step thru the command line switches?!

No, this isn't a geek hacking site, but the current subject matter is *definitely* within that domain. If you'd like to advocate, I encourage you to build the tool and .app-a-fy it over lunch ;)

@23, Joe:

Joe, Joe, Joe...stop, as they say, "drinking the Kool-aid"...seriously.

This whole notion of apps taking down networks and all of that is patently absurd and completely laughable. In a word, "ballsy" on the part of Apple.

There isn't any "magic" going on inside of the iPhone. It is running darwin with some apple frameworks on top (what Apple are calling "OS X v1.0"...note that it is NOT *Mac* OS X.). The "apps" on the iPhone are *NOT* Cocoa, they are essentially dashboard widgets. The entire UI is made of PNG graphics.

What we have here is yet another case of Apple's hyperbole being taken literally...something that is not supposed to happen; See: definition of hyperbole.

In addition, ATT doesn't care if or not you use "iChat"...they ship several phones with aim clients on them already *that do not use sms*...they ship even more phones with J2ME on then that let you run anything...*including accessing this allegedly vulnerable network*.

The mobile phone business did NOT begin with Apple's entry into it, you know. People have been writing mobile apps for a decade. Any limitations on the iPhone are by design and the total domain of Apple Inc.
